Analysis of the match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool
Liverpool produced an emphatic 4-0 victory over Galatasaray in midweek to secure a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. At the very least, it was a rare positive sign for the Reds in a season where they have declined significantly compared to the same stage last year.
The win over the Turkish side brought several bright spots for Liverpool. Most notably, Mohamed Salah rediscovered his scoring touch, contributing one goal and one assist, which helped ease some of the pressure after an underwhelming start to the season. In addition, Liverpool’s midfield impressed greatly, with Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Wirtz, and Mac Allister all making direct contributions to the goals.
However, it must also be acknowledged that Galatasaray have been extremely poor away from home. Prior to this, they had lost 0-3 to Juventus despite playing with a numerical advantage from relatively early in the match. Therefore, while the 4-0 win was a much-needed boost, Arne Slot’s men still cannot afford to be overly confident. That resounding result is not enough to hide the reality that Liverpool have still looked inconsistent throughout this season.
Returning to Premier League action, Liverpool will immediately face a far from straightforward challenge away at Brighton. Although the home side have virtually secured their Premier League status and no longer have much motivation in the race for European qualification, Brighton remain a difficult opponent for the league’s top clubs. Their recent form has also been encouraging, with three wins in their last four league matches.
The Amex Stadium continues to be a major source of strength for Brighton. In their last 19 home matches in the Premier League, they have lost only three times. Notably, during that run, Brighton defeated Manchester City, beat Liverpool themselves, and only narrowly lost 0-1 to Arsenal on March 5. Moreover, in Liverpool’s last three Premier League visits to the Amex, they have managed just one draw and suffered two defeats.
Overall, Brighton have never been an easy opponent, especially when playing at full intensity. Given the current circumstances, this away trip promises to be full of danger, and Liverpool’s chances of taking all three points are far from guaranteed.
